1. Explain what type of narration is used in this story.
I believe that the type of narration that is used in this story is third person point of view. It is because the narrator relates events using words like: "she and the woman's name."
2. How is "The Shining Houses" structured? Why do you suppose Munro structured the narrative this way?
I think that Munro structured "The Shining Houses" using the retrospective narration using words like (had, did, was, etc.) I suppose Munro structured the narrative this way because it was in the past. It was a story maybe she thought would sound better in the past or make it more intriguing.
3. Discuss the irony in the story with respect to the title.
I think the irony of the story is that you think that the families would be all nice and friendly. Though they are definitely not, they want to kick somebody out of their house because her house isn't nice, it's old and dirty. They moved there for the nice houses that were affordable, and yet they take advantage of it so that they feel bigger and could get rid of the people they could have been if these
houses weren't there.
4. What distinction does the story highlight in terms of the difference between legal and moral?
What they are doing to Mrs Fullerton technically is legal, what they are doing is paying her to move out of her house so they can take it down and put in a lane. Though what they are doing is completely immoral, you should never kick somebody out of their own house no matter how bad looking it is, if it’s safe to live in it they have the right to live it in.
5. Sketch Mary's character.
I think Mary is a very caring person. She did her best to stick up for Mrs. Fullerton, even though it did not end up working, I don’t believe. I think she is someone who would never go behind your back. She cares about her child and husband but also went against her husband on what he was trying to do to Mrs. Fullerton. She didn’t talk bad about her either when everyone else was.
